8vo (200 x 120mm). [12], 35, [10], 498 pp. 4pp., ads at rear. Each part with full-page engraved frontispiece, first of Saul encountering vision of Samuel, and second of six scenes including demonic possession, witchcraft, flying, and a deathbed. Title printed in red and black, large plate in the second part giving the dimensions of two stones, three in text figures of diagrams for soul and spirit lines, and ornamental woodcut head and tail-pieces throughout. Bound in a remboitage binding of French armorial, full red morocco in fanfare design, elaborately tooled in gilt and with the arms of Marie Leszczynska (1703-1768), France’s much loved Polish Queen, to the covers, spine with a contemporary red morocco lettering label "GLANVIL ON WITCHES" likely from an early English binding, later red silk pastedowns and endpapers, the silk front pastedown signed by "Saint Yves 350 Rue St. Honore"; (title lightly toned around edges, joints starting and light spotting, but otherwise good). An English note in a late eighteenth or early nineteenth century hand discussing corrections to contents, and few marginal notes throughout. A curious and beautiful remboitage, the reclaiming of the royal heraldic binding of Marie Lescyznska seems likely from the clue of the early twentieth century binder’s stamp of Saint Yves of Rue St. Honoré. The binder can be located in a 1905 advertisement and is described as leather worker and heraldic engraver; it is likely that the Parisian binder Saint Yves rebound or reworked this particular copy at that time. Nevertheless, the Glanvill edition and dates for the life of the French queen offer interesting parallels. In 1726, the year of this edition, Marie Leszczynska would have been 23 years old and a newlywed to the French king Louis XV. In fact, her first twin daughters were not born until the following year in 1727. It is easy to imagine the possibility that this book was specially bound for Marie as part of her personal library’s move into Versailles after her marriage to Louis in 1725, perhaps while she was still in transition and filling her quarters. Marie Lesczynka’s household and fanfare bindings are extraordinarily rare but another example of a similar one can be located on a Breviary prayer book dated to 1752, which is seemingly original to the text. What persists for this copy is the peculiar, enforced relationship between the possible one time owner and contents. Occult and magic practice have a long tradition in court circles of Europe and the occupants of Versailles, especially at this time, were not immune to its reach. First published in 1681, the present stated fourth edition of Glanvill’s Sadducismus Triumphatus contains many additions including engraved plates, one for scenes of demonic possession and levitating figures. This is a magnificently and curiously bound copy of this important work purporting to provide evidence of witches and witchcraft. N° de ref. de la librería WB14657
