Baltimore 1987, Nautical & Aviation Publ, first US edition, hard bound in dust jacket, , 6x9, VG/VG cond. 460 pages. AUTOGRAPHED EDITION, SIGNED BOOK PLATE BY AUTHOR, ADMIRAL MACK. -----------------------------------------Superb novel, lst in a series of four, which follows the crew of a old U.S. Navy 4 stack destroyer in it's battles with the Japanese from Manila Bay to the Java Sea, 1941-42. Picture yourself as one of 120 men aboard a rusty, aging four-stack destroyer, hurriedly built for service in 1918, but now, badly in need of an overhaul, put in the blazing South Pacific and steaming toward the deadly Battle of the Java Sea-one of the big, bad ones where the U.S. sacrificed a small fleet and the Japanese picked it off, ship by ship. The USS OLeary (DD-200) is fictitious; there never was a destroyer with the hull number 200. But the O'Leary is true to her type-1100 tons, slightly over 300 feet long, with twelve 21" torpedo tubes in open mounts, some 3" and 4" hand loaded guns, a couple of machine guns, oil fueled, 4 boilers, and capable of 35 knots. She's old, but she's tough as nails.SOUTH TO JAVA gives you an immediate sense of what it was like to be in the South Pacific during those extraordinary times. Both authors are navymen-Admiral Mack, a career officer who brings his firsthand experience with the Asiatic Fleet to the realistic, action-packed battle scenes, and his son, a former destroyer officer. The story is seen through the eyes of a young officer, Lieutenant (junior grade) Ross Fraser, who must contend with his suicidal captain, his aged ship, and a complement of salty sailors drawn from the old China station. Fraser has his problems in peacetime, but when the fighting starts, the crew and the rugged old four-stacker come together to work as a fighting unit. N° de ref. de la librería 30061
