A SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE NAVY 1793 - 1815. Michael Lewis. George Allen & Unwin, London. 1960 First edition 468pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in fine, unmarked condition bound in publisher's original blue cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine and anchor device to the front. The unclipped dust wrapper has some minimal edge wear especially to the top but is entire and has now been covered in clear removable protective film. Pitt the Younger described the men who 'saved England by their exertions and Europe by the example', were primarily, their sailors. The Naval officers and men of 1793-1815 have never yet been studied as a single entity, as members of a living, growing profession; and this book is a serious attempt to fill the gap. It follows them from the cradle to the grave. It examines their parentage and home backgrounds, both social and geographical; how they were entered and recruited; how they were promoted - or not, if they were not fortunate enough to enjoy 'Interest' how they were housed and fed on board, from the lordly Captain to the humblest Boy; how they nwere rewarded - their pay, allowances, prize money and other possible emoluments; and, finally, the price they paid for saving Britain - their losses by enemy action, accident and disease. It is a fascinating, often surprising story, and historically, a most significant one. Ref Z4 Size: 468pp. N° de ref. de la librería 010672
