FIRST EDITION. 8vo., pp. 15-326. Three maps, 16 colour photographic illustrations, 16 b/w photographic illustrations, all by the author. Original blue cloth, fresh. Dust jacket with attractive colour photograph by author, slightly frayed and worn, but sound. Many years after the publication of Slowly Down the Ganges in 1966 I saw a television documentary in which Eric Newby talked about his 1,200-mile journey down the most sacred and venerated river on earth with his wife Wanda. Although he had served in the Army in India some 22 years before this voyage in the winter of 1963/64, he talked like many Europeans seeing India for the first time, of being initially overwhelmed by the combination of sheer exuberant life, and often squalor and poverty, that was so much of the Indian scene. Until, that is, he saw past the poverty and squalor, and began to understand the unimportance of these material western concepts in a land where people celebrated their humanity largely in the spiritual world of their varied beliefs. This book is Eric Newby at his best and it is not long before we are, with him and Wanda, meeting the extraordinary life of India and travelling Slowly Down the Ganges. Descripción de la librería: We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
