Descripción 2 pp. 9 x 7 inches, in good condition. London, 6 September 1808. Uncommon. Henry Aston Barker (1774–1856), landscape and panorama painter and exhibitor. He frequently travelled in the course of his work, and in August 1799 left England for Turkey, to make drawings for a panorama of Constantinople. At Palermo, he called on Sir William Hamilton, the English ambassador to the court of Naples, who introduced him to Lord Nelson, who, he wrote, "took me by the hand and said he was indebted to me for keeping up the fame of his victory in the Battle of the Nile for a year longer than it would have lasted in the public estimation" (Barker's memoranda). The panorama of Constantinople was exhibited in 1802, and the drawings were engraved and published in four plates. In 1801, Barker went to Copenhagen to make drawings for a picture of the battle, and while there he was again received by Nelson. In May 1802, during the Peace of Amiens, he went to Paris and made drawings for a panorama of the city. After this many other panoramas were exhibited, including the Coronation Procession of King George IV. Nº de ref. de la librería 15806

Descripción 4to. 1 page, approximately 150 words; docketed, probably by Koehler, on verso. Accompanied by a postcard from Moran to Koehler, written the same day, with a short note in ink, signed by Moran. The letter is somewhat chipped and frayed along the edges and is separated at one horizontal fold; the postcard is very good. For the pair In the letter, Moran describes each of three proofs, two of scenes Mrs. Moran composed from the window of their 55th Street apartment, the other entitled "A Summer Day Near Newark," and offers prices for the finished etching. The postcard notes that Mrs. Moran would like Koehler to keep the proofs "in any case." Moran is best known for his painting "The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone," made while accompanying the U.S. Geological Expedition under F.V. Hayden, and other pictures of the American west. "If he was among the ablest painters of the great mountains, canyons, waterfalls, and other spectacles of nature in America, it was in large measure because he had assimilated the grand style of his exemplar, Turner, with its daring color, its visible atmosphere, and its spectacular splendor of effect, and knew how to adapt it to his own subject-matter" (DAB).
