Descripción

New York 1968, Dial Press, x, 210 pages, illus, notes, bibliog, index. hard bound in dust jacket, VG/VG condition. -------------------------------------- For five days in July, 1863, New York City was the scene of some of the bloodiest rioting in American history. What began as a protest against the new Federal Enrollment and Conscription Act quickly turned into uncontrolled rebellion, resulting in an estimated 1,200 deaths and millions of dollars of property damage. Thirteen regiments of regular troops were eventually required before the pillaging mobs 'could be subdued. In this meticulously researched book, James McCague recreates the day-by-day tragedy of the riots. He analyzes their causes in the events, personalities, and social attitudes of the time. He offers portraits of such leading New Yorkers as Horace Greeley, the editor of the Tribune and one of the intended victims of the mob; Governor Horatio Seymour; and Mayor Fernando Wood. He offers a shocking picture of the vile and vice-ridden slums of the day, and of the organized street gangs-the Bowery Boys and the Dead Rabbits - over whom the police had no control. Scheming politicians, inept police and military officials, rabble-rousers, and civic heroes such as Police Superintendent John A. Kennedy, are all recalled from history in Mr. McCague's graphic, informed, and balanced assessment.Erupting as they did just a few days after the Battle of Gettysburg, the riots were suspected of having been inspired by Confederate agents. A good deal of the barbaric, hysterical rioting was directed specifically against Negroes. Mr. McCague carefully examines all of the evidence and draws his conclusions. He vividly describes the aftermath of the disaster, and traces the later careers of its major figures.Important as history, readable as a novel, and of especial interest as a study of mob violence, THE SECOND REBELLION is a timely account of America's first draft act and the public reaction to it.
