The letter was occasioned by the death of Metcalf's father which, clearly, Olson was affected by. "I just, because a man asked me, was reading Letter To Melville, 1951 -- and stopped with the name Harry, proud that I had put your father's name there, beside your Mother's, and decided to write you immediately to console you and Nancy because Harry has died. Henry K. Metcalf. Isn't it really a nice thing he was, and I hope the fact that he did live so that we all felt he was clearly himself . that your own feelings, both of you, may be that he simply did live out his term of life (as those words really do say it, though I never myself -- and I imagine others of us (?) -- didn't know these words do cover the meanness, that our lives do have to end), and that this will lessen for you that you don't have a father in the world any more." Olson owed much to the Metcalf family, having been adopted as a surrogate family member by them when he was doing the massive research that culminated in the publication of his epic 1947 study of Herman Melville, "Call Me Ishmael." Paul Metcalf's mother, Eleanor, was Melville's granddaughter and his literary executor. Having intimate access to the Melville papers was of the utmost importance to Olson on both a professional and personal level, as the associative ramblings of the letter reveal.
