Acerca de

Sinopsis:

Between the ninth and tenth centuries, the Buddhist Tendai school grew from a small outpost to the most influential school in Japan under the tutelage of the monk Ryogen (912-985). Focusing on institutional history, Groner (religious studies, U. of Virginia) examines the reasons for the school's remarkable growth through the window of Ryogen's biography (many of the schools papers have been destroyed in fire). He examines the structure of success for monks in monasteries, Ryogen's political activity, changes in the Tendai educational system, and the priorities and funding of rebuilding efforts after the destruction of the monastery by fire.
