159 pages; Publisher's terra-cotta ribbed cloth, spine lettered in gilt. A lovely copy, clean, tight and with just the faintest signs of any use or wear. Pencil signature on front free endpaper ["Coleman Jennings / April 1929]. No date specified on the volume, but OCLC supplies a date of 1929 [see OCLC Number: 41332284], which is strongly supported by the dated pencil signature in this excellent copy. The author, J. S. N. Sewell had degrees from both the Sorbonne (Paris) and Trinity College, Dublin. According to a note on the website of his last school [Farnborough Grammar School, in Hampshire, U.K.] --Sewell ran his own private school before the war, but that this had somehow failed. He was also the author of a book of talks for boys leaving preparatory school, published in 1928 [An ad for this other title is found in a box opposite the title page]. In addition, Sewell was a dramatist and had several plays broadcast by the B.B.C. His great aunt was the Victorian author Anna Sewell ['Black Beauty']. The present volume uses a metaphor of the running and care of a motor-car for advising young "Public" school boys on the conduct of life, success at school, etc. Charming, and now rather scarce, both in institutional holdings (a handful in the UK; none in the USA) and in the trade.
