A. J. Holman, 1973. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Here you have a very solid copy of the FIRST EDITION of 'To Rule The Night' by James Irwin. The dust jacket is non-price clipped and is in good condition. This is rare FIRST EDITION . James Irwin was one of the 19 astronauts selected by NASA in April 1966. He also served as a member of the astronaut support crew for Apollo 10, the first mission to carry the full Apollo stack to the moon, and was the dry run for the first manned moon landing. He then served as backup lunar module pilot for the second moon landing mission, Apollo 12. Apollo 15 Between July 26 and August 7, 1971 – as the Apollo 15 Lunar Module Pilot (LMP) – Irwin logged 295 hours and 11 minutes in space. His Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) on the Moon's surface amounted to 18 hours and 30 minutes of the mission time (an additional 33 minutes was used to do a stand-up EVA by opening the LM's docking hatch to survey the surroundings and take photographs). Irwin's mission was more science-based than previous missions, which meant that he received intensive geological training to meet the demanding nature of the J-Mission profile. This extra training is credited with allowing him to make one of the most important discoveries of the Apollo era: the Genesis Rock. Apollo 15 landed in the Moon's Hadley-Apennine region, noted for its mountains and rills. Since this was a J-Mission, it meant that they would spend more time on the moon than previous missions, to allow for three EVAs. As well, Irwin was the first automobile passenger on the moon, since he was not the driver of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) carried along for this mission in the Lunar Module (LM) Falcon's Descent Stage. Irwin's stay on the Moon was just under three days at 66 hours and 54 minutes. A patch cut by Irwin from the backpack abandoned on the Moon during the Apollo 15 mission was auctioned at Christie's in 2001 for $310,500 in a consignment of material from Irwin's estate that garnered "a combined $500,000". Irwin attributed his time in space to lead to a strong devotion to God. He left NASA and started a ministry called High Flight. Irwin died in 1991. This book represents a monumental part of history. GAMBIT'S Collectibles Hi, my wife and I recently founded GAMBIT'S Collectibles on line business. We decided to name the business after one of our family members. We first met Gambit at an -Adopt a pet- show held by a pet store as a community services event. We were actually looking for a small dog, a lap dog if you will for her. As we looked at the puppies and older dogs we had a difficult time deciding. Gambit was sitting quietly in the corner as the other puppies yipped and barked as all the strangers coming by to look at them. I don't know if you believe in an emotional bond but there was definitely an immediate connection between Gambit and I. At first I just wanted to pick him up and take a closer look. When I did Gambit did something I will never forget. He held on to my arm with his paws wrapped around -clinging- to me. This connection created a strong bond between us. My wife tells people that I hogged the puppy and wandered off into a corner of the pet store with him so no one else could have a chance to pick him. I have to admit it is true. However, because we came for a different breed of dog we decided to wait until more dogs were brought to the event. So we went to lunch with plans to come back in an hour or so. I told myself that the puppy I liked so much would be long gone by then. Someone would pick him for sure. Who could resist? So with some trepidation I left it up to fate. Well, we ate our lunch and came back to the event in time to see the new dogs arriving at the pet store. We looked them over and considered a couple but I could not get Gambit out of my mind. So, I went to see if he was still in the pen they had for the puppies. Amazingly he was still there. I picked him up and we have been faithful friends every since. Our family loves Gambit and I am thankful for his unconditional love for our family every day. So, when we decided to create an on line business we needed a CEO and Gambit was elected. His bark is worse than his bite! Some of the proceeds from our sales will go the local animal shelter here in Colorado to give others a chance to adopt a pet and maybe they will be as lucky as we were. We are proud contributors to the local Humane Society and the business makes monthly contributions via the PAWS system.
