Bound in full burgundy morocco, gilt title and ruled border on cover, the spine in six compartments separated by gilt-ruled raised bands, with titles in two compartments and gilt-ruled panels in the remaining compartments, marbled endpapers, heavy stock; French fold, t.e.g. Illustrated with 56 photo-lithograph plates by Elihu Vedder. From the moment of its publication, Elihu Vedder's Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám achieved unparalleled success. The first edition appeared in Boston on 8 November 1884; six days later, it was sold out. Critics rushed to acclaim it as a masterwork of American art, and Vedder (1836 - 1923) as the master American artist. [Smithsonian American Art Museum]. This is a custom-bound copy of the octavo edition, published by Houghton, Mifflin in 1894, ten years after the original Elephant Folio edition. . This is an unmarked copy, tight, square and clean, with a former owner's bookplate on the fep and corners lightly bumped. The exquisite morocco binding has been expertly refurbished.
