Descripción

2pp., small 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly aged paper. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'Mr. Smith | Mechanic Arms | Henry Street | oppe Ancott Street | Manchester'. With contemporary note, in another hand, on separate piece of paper: '312. | Journal of Sergt. Major Dove, of six Years Service of the 7th Royal Fusiliers, in the Peninsula'. Dove's letter is signed ' Dove | Serg Major | Royal Fusiliers' and begins: 'Dear Smith | I herewith forward the Journal which I have just got completed and am convinced that you will find it interesting, particularly as it is the history of a Regiment you so well remember, and for which I know you have still the greatest regard. I would advise you to let every one see it as I am convinced that there are but few such productions to be met with kept in the manner that was'. He states that he has 'spared no pains to get it copied correctly', and that 'every word therein contained is as true as the original'. There are 'many instances' which he believes Smith 'will well remember'. He asks him to send 'a line [.] acknowledging the receipt of it', and asks him to 'give my Kindest Respects to Adam and Whitworth and all friends at Manchester'. He concludes by asking him to 'Tell Adam that I am rather surprised at not hearing from him before this'. The journal does not appear to have survived. N° de ref. de la librería 15547
