The Antarctic expedition led by John Clark Ross in the ships HMS Erebus and Terror extended from 1839 to 1843 and today is acknowledged as one of the first such ventures devoted to scientific endarvour, in addition to exploring new territories and improving oceanic mapping. In effect, this expedition began the scientific examination of the southern polar region. The findings of the expedition exceeded what had been expected, returning with informaption ranging over geology, vulcanology, meteorology, natural history, oceanography, botany and astronomy. The Ross expedition provided a vastly increased pool of knowledge on what had been a sparsely recorded and largely unknown polar area. This was contained in the official account of the expedition published in 1847. However, this new study, compiled by Rear Admiral M J Ross, a great-grandson of John Clark Ross, about 100 yeas later is considered to be the first serious review of the expedition, and its findings, with re-evaluation of these placing them in a modern perspecutive. While the purpose of the expedition was mainly scietific and academic, the voyages of the Terror and Erebus, and for all those who sailed on them, were packed with adventures, hazards and experiences sedom before encountered. All these varied events and incidents are covered by the author with the same skill and accuracy as are the more serious aspects of the venture. His access to the records and papers of John Clarke Ross. gave authenticity and substrance to this new account. First published by Caedmon in 1982. 278 pages including two appendices, sources and notes, bibliography and index, illustrated with b/w art frontis portrait of J C Ross plus 25 b/w contemporary art plates and portraits, several art chapter heads, two intext illustrations, seven maps through text block plus two folded maps at back.
