Acerca de

Printed in an edition limited to 1000 copies, of which this copy is out of series. Despite the artist's talent as a painter, sculptor, draftsman, medalist, and designer of stained glass, the etchings of Romeyn de Hooghe 1645-1708 are the subject of this volume. The author offers what little was known in the early 1970s regarding de Hooghe's bibliography in the preface. The bulk of the volume is concerned with the book and separately produced print production of this cousin of Pieter de Hooch, the famous seventeenth-century painter of the Delft School. The preface and full text of the first chapter of de Hooghe's treatise Spiegel van Staat Mirror of the State is reproduced as a series of facsimiles of the original Dutch text, with English translation flanking. De Hooghe's print production follows. A list of captions accompanies each category into which the prints are divided: rustic scenes, newsprints, political caricatures, portraits, topography, morals and customs, and allegories. Many of these groupings contain subdivisions for easier location of particular subjects, like Louis XIV, Willem III, and Jan III Sobieski. Seemingly, a very important volume for the print production of this artist, as well as for the visually documented history of the later seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Spine faded. 406 pages. full green cloth; pictorial slipcase. wide landscape 4to..
