Descripción

Louis Becke produced 35 books, most associated with the South Pacific. This was his 10th publication, consisting 20 seperate stories, the title being taken from the first and one of the longest in the selection. These range over a number of contemporary situations involving inter-action between Europeans and natives, perils of the sea, island traders, racial conflicts, blackbirding and piracy. The author writes with knowledge and practical experience of sailing, trading and living in the South Pacific in those colonial and often unruly times. This edition in the "Colonial Library" series, published in London, with few changes to presentation, the same year (1898) as the first British printing. 331 pages followed by 12 pages promoting publisher's other titles. This copy from Gisborne (NZ) bookseller Wm Miller's "circulating library". Green hard covers VG with light spotting to front board, with light wear corners/spine extremities, back board has pasted sheet outlining library conditions, another sheet noting the trade of the "'hairdresser and bookseller" on front pastedown, small brown sport near top edge FFEP, small oval library stamp with central ink number on title page, front cover slightly loose but firmly attached, Miller's stamp blank section last page of text, otherwise internally VG+ with isolated foxing spots.
