'Clem, th eboy; The Runner, a young stallion, and Poojer the dog, were a devoted trio. Clem, who lived on his uncle's ranch in Wyoming, had caught The Runner for himself, luring him away from the wild herd and riding him to a standstill. When boy and horse had spent a night in the open together defying a prowling bear, The Runner began to trust Clem, who was able to ride him home. The Runner had only one fault. Devoted though he was to Clem, he loved to escape and run wild on the range again. Poojer went with him. They always returned, until - they left it too late. They ran away for the last time just before winter came to the hight country. Before they came home it was time to shut up the ranch and go down the hills. Deeply distressed, Clem stayed behind after his uncle and aunt had gone, but eventually he too had to leave. Horse and dog were alone together, facing the dangers of the mountain winter; snow and gales, near-starvation and the mountain lion. The spell of wild places and the appeal of mutual devotion are in this tale of their survival and of Clem's return to the ranch in the spring.' 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
