Bound in dark blue green (almost black) cloth, blocked with gilt decorations of the Mahdi's tomb and a gunboat. xxiii+462, xiv+ 499 pages, total of 57 illustrations, many especially drawn by Angus McNeill of the Seaforth Highlanders, 34 maps and plans many coloured and folding. Both volumes 1st printings. This set has decent shelf appearance with clear gilt titling, vol II slightly brighter. Both front covers clean, but but vol. I has a horizontal crease in the cloth. Vol. I lacks the half title, contents very clean with almost no foxing. Both hinges broken. There is a damp stain at lower inside corner from page 325 to end. Spine ends worn with splits. Vol. II has unmarked bright covers, a small nick in the back joint, bookplate on pastedown, front hinge almost completely gone, rear hinge well cracked. Contents very clean with no foxing seen. Descripción Longmans, Green & Co, London, 1899. Leather bound. First Edition. 8vo. xxii, [2], 462; x[4], 499pp. Index. Vol 1: 16 maps & plans; 25 illustrations; Vol. II: 18 maps & plans, 33 illustrations by Angus McNeil, Seaforth Highlanders. Bayntun-Riviere binding in full red morocco with gilt lettering and ruling to covers, spines & inside boards; 5 raised bands; marbled endpapers; AEG. Original dark blue covers & spines bound in at rear of each volume. A fine set in the striking Bayntun-Riviere leather binding. Churchill wrote this, his second book, while still an officer in the British army. Here he provides the history of the British involvement in the Sudan and the conflict between the British and Dervish forces. "The first object of this book is to relate in exact military detail the operations directed by Lord Kitchener of Khartoum on the Upper Nile from April 1896 to February 1899, which I have called 'The River War,' and which resulted in the reconquest of the Egyptian Soudan. But in order that the reader may understand, and even sympathise with the emotions which these events excited, I have prefixed a general survey of the geography, aspect, and history of the country, and have tried to show its connection with Egypt and Great Britain." - Preface. Only 2000 copies were published on 6 November 1899. Woods A2(a). Nº de ref. de la librería 12720
