'Portrait of an Honest and Wise Man'. In ITALIAN and ARMENIAN (? ) . A small volume measuring 5 inches by 3 inches (12.3 cm x 7.2 cm) in marbled paper covered boards - 1cm missing from the bottom inner edge of the spine, edges and corners rubbed & a little worn here and there. The rear spine has probably been re-glued - but very neatly & securely. Internally there are 2 spots of sealing wax (? ) in green and yellow on the front pastedown where something was attached once, and a former owner has written 'Italian + Armenian' in pencil on that blank pastedown. The book then lacks all before the Italian Title page which is printed in black with a small oval motif (a lyre? /part-circle leaves? ) between the title and the publisher. A indecipherable word in ink is written on the reverse of the Title. 42 pp, then a further Heading reading 'Massime Dell' Umana Prudenza o sia IL Ritratto Dell 'Uomo Onesto' - taking the pagination up to 48 pp. Fine (The End). Then a further Title page in (? ) Armenian following the same format as the Italian page although the small motif here is just a circle of leaves and the date LOOKS as if it reads 1826? ? - unfortunately I am unable to read any of it as it's all in script/Armenian alphabet! . 46 pp. Then a further section with a Heading plus more pages to 52 pp. And what I assume is an Index? Taking the final pagination of that section to 56 pp. TEXTS in ITALIAN & ARMENIAN. Images available on request. Pretty Scarce. Very Interesting for linguists and historians/researchers I would think. " There is an Armenian Monastery in Venice. The monastery & church of St Lazzaro inhabited by the Armenian Fathers can be found on Lord Byron’s beloved St Lazzaro isle. The island was left abandoned until 1717 when it was given to a noble Armenian monk from Sebaste, called Manug di Pietro who became known as Mechitar (the consoler). He had fled Mondone which had been invaded by Turks, and there on the island founded his monastery. Mechitar chose young co-nationals to learn and study from him and then to spread their knowledge throughout eastern Europe. They translated scientific, literary and religious works into their own language. After his death his ambitious plans were developed further with the purchase of a printing machine in 1786. The institution became known as the Armenian Mechitaristi Fathers and over the centuries the monastery’s libaries were enriched by a long line of Armenian monk intellectuals." . So I can only assume this was printed there. SEE IMAGES; 32mo 4" - 5" tall. N° de ref. de la librería 111759
