Duodecimo size, 519 pp. In this novel, Mr. Howells explores "the jostle and recoil of unadjusted social castes, [with] the culture of Boston consort[ing] with its untutored wealth" (DAB, V., 308). William Dean Howells (1837-1920), born to an anti-slavery journalist, setting type in his father's print ship at the age of 9 years, a biographer of President Lincoln for which he was rewarded by being appointed to the American Consulate in Venice, later in his professional life serving as editor-in-chief of the Atlantic Monthly, a life-long friend of Mark Twain - a fascinating man who became known as the father of American realism and a denouncer of the sentimental novel, epitomized in Silas Lapham. ___DESCRIPTION: Brown cloth boards with black rectangular decoration near the top of the front board, title in raised lettering below that within a gilt band, author's name in gilt lettering beneath that, publisher's device in black near the bottom of the front board, a simpler black decoration on the spine, similar title on a gilt background, grey endpapers. Pagination: (i-iv), (1)-515. ___CONDITION: Overall very good+, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and minimal prior owner markings comprised of a gift inscription, in pencil, on the front free endpaper in a flowing script, dated Nov. 19, 1885.
