First Edition, American issue (also published in Warszawa & Kraków by Polish Scientific Publishers). xvii, 450 pp; errata slip; illus. Original cloth, folio. Near Fine, without dust jacket. This book being so important, I think it's worth reviewing the English translations. Alistair M. Duncan published one in 1976, then Rosen's first appeared in 1978 [offered here]; Rosen's was reprinted in paperback by Johns Hopkins in 1992. I believe scholarly reviews compare and contrast the two, yet I also believe each is taken to be valuable for its own reasons by those scholars (in other words, one is not clearly 'better' than the other). Copernicus expert Owen Gingerich reviewed Rosen's edition for Sky and Telescope, Vol. 59, p. 148, 1980, and Gerald J. Toomer did for the Journal for the History of Astronomy, V. 12, p. 198, 1981 (those reviews would certainly be well worth consulting). I cannot locate a review of Duncan's edition. The 1995 Prometheus Books edition is a reprint of Charles Glenn Wallis' obsolete translation, first published in Great Books of the Western World Vol. 16 (1952); that press has published some good books but I don't know what they were thinking here. In 2004, something called Running Press published its own edition, the contents of which are unclear to me (I don't think it reprints any translation in full; it even preposterously refers to the work as an 'essay' -- at 450 pages?). Their Web site does note that it features 'a biography of Copernicus and an accessible, enlightening introduction, both written by the renowned physicist Stephen Hawking.' Hawking's a great physicist, but he's no historian of astronomy (though I don't doubt he's in a good position to truly understand Copernicus given his scientific expertise); this book is typical of the popular science title that regrettably is published all too often by presses such as this (and, even more regrettably, sometimes by much better presses!). Sources tell me Rosen (1906-1985) was a difficult man but I think the quality of his scholarship -- which ranges far beyond this translation -- has stood the test of time. Acerca de

Reseña del editor:

In 1973, on the 500th anniversary of Copernicus's birth, the Polish Academy of Sciences announced its intention to publish all of the astronomer's extant works, both in their original Latin and in modern translations. Here, available for the first time in softcover, are Edward Rosen's authoritative English translations and commentaries.
