8vo. 8pp. Very good. Binding traces along gutter. First edition. Attractive copy of Report No. 1251 of the 1st Session of the 49th Congress, being a report on the feasibility of the Tehuantepec Route, the narrowest spot in Mexico between the Gulf of Mexico to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. For decades the notion of a combination canal and railroad line connecting these two oceans had been discussed. This particular proposal includes sections on "Practicability of the Ship-Railway," "Surveys, Plans, and Profiles," "Incorporation of Company and Governmental Guarantees," "Repayment by Company of Government Loan," "Consideration for Guarantee," "Necessity of Government Aid," "Advantages of the Tehauntepec Route," "Advantages of a Railway Over a Canal," "Previous Action of Committee," Necessity of a Charter," "Grants by Mexico to the Company," etc. Mexico's Tehuantepec Route consisted of 134 miles of dry ground, while Panama's route consisted of only 50 miles -- but they were wet and muddy. This U.S. government proposal failed, and the Mexican government eventually completed the project itself. N° de ref. de la librería 36944
