Committee appointed June 1835 ‘to take into consideration the Duties on Timber, and to report their Observations …; and to whom several Petitions upon the Timber Duties presented to The House … and a Bill to provide for the better Collection of the Duties on Wood, the produce of places in Europe, were severally referred …’. Witnesses include James Deacon Hume [1774-1842, free trade advocate, see D.N.B.], John Neilson, representing inhabitants of Lower Canada, Sir Robert Smirke, architect [1781-1867, see D.N.B.] and a number of timber merchants and importers including Henry Warburton, M.P. and London [Lambeth] timber merchant [1784?-1858, see D.N.B.]. Evidence contains much information re timber trade in general, trade with Canada, U.S.A., Sweden, Scandinavia, Northern Europe, Prussia, Norway, Russia, timber for building purposes, shipbuilding, etc. Folio.
