Leather deteriorating with moderate loss at corners and ends of spine. Spine leather heavily rubbed with some surface chips. 1 1/2" split to leather at ends of joints. Joints holding. Internally very good.; Votes and Proceedings of the Provincial Council of Otago for Session XVI, 1862 and Session XVII, 1863, bound in one volume. Contemporary half-calf binding. Printed on blue paper. Page dimensions: 307 x 191mm. Containing two early and important reports on the Otago Gold-Fields by Vincent Pyke. Pyke first came to New Zealand in 1862 and was given the position of Commissioner of Gold Fields. By 1864, the height of the gold rush in Otago was over. The first report in this volume "On the Progress, Condition, and Prospects of the Gold Fields of Otago" is paginated from 15-27. It is printed in double columns. The second report is paginated from 1-20, also printed in double columns. It is subdivided into the following sections: I. Progress of Discovery; II. Produce; III. Effect of Discoveries; IV. Revenue and Expenditure; V. Present Condition of the Gold Fields; VI. Climate; VII. Agriculture; VII. Fuel and Timber; [I]X. Future Prospects. The two reports are remarkable for their detail, literary quality, and contemporaneity. The entire bound volume contains several hundred pages (the pagination is complex) with much else of interest on the early history of Otago, including a hand-coloured map showing the proposed area for reclamation in the area where First Church now stands.
