Not illustrated. 1914 Excerpt: ...were dismissed, personal bonds were taken in 16 cases, collaterals forfeited in 13 cases, and fines were imposed in 5 cases. The amount of fines and the collateral forfeited was $91. There were 13 cases pending. The cases nolle prossed by the assistant corporation counsel at the police court were so disposed of because the nuisances for the maintenance of which the defendants were charged had been abated before the cases were called for trial, although after the cases had been submitted for prosecution. Inspector's time spent in the police court amounted in all to 89 working days. Under the assessment system, 415 notices were served on nonresident owners for the abatement of nuisances on property owned by them in the District of Columbia. In all but 5 cases such nuisances were abated by the owners, without the necessity for further action by the commissioners. In the 5 cases in which abatement was not effected by the owners, the District caused the necessary work to be done at a cost of $40.45, which was assessed as a tax against the property upon which the nuisances had existed. REGISTRATION OF STABLES, BARBER SHOPS, AND LAUNDRIES. There were registered during the year 79 stables, 131 barber shops, 18 laundries, and 118 permanent privies, as shown below: Registration of stables, barber shops, laundries, and privies during the fiscal year 1913-14 Stables.--During the year 1,486 inspections of stables were made, and 177 nuisances discovered. The average frequency of inspection of each stable during the year was 1.3 times. While the sanitary condition of the stables in the District is constantly improving, much remains to be done before it can be said to be ideal. With the limited number of inspectors at the disposal of the health department it is impossible ...
