Descripción

London 1977, Jonathan Cape, first UK edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 5 1/2 x 8 3/4, FINE/FINE CONDITION, ( pages lightly browning as is common with this book, dj price clipped ), xv, 384 pages, illustrations, bibliog, index.-----------------------------------------------------------The soldier with the widest range of active service to be found in the records of the British Army,' observed the distinguished military historian, Sir John Fortescue, of Sir Harry Smith. During the first half of the nineteenth century, when war was still the greatest show on earth, this zestfully self-willed, impetuous, dare-devil Englishman could boast of having engaged in no less than 400 skirmishes, general actions, sieges and storms of fortified towns and camps in the Americas, Africa, India and in Europe against the armies of Napoleon.------------------------------------------------------------Sir Harry proved as fervent a lover as he had been a stormer of ramparts. Following the siege of Badajoz, he won and married a strikingly beautiful Spanish girl barely fourteen, Juana. It was an ideal match. As courageous, gay of spirit, and hot-tempered as her husband, the Spanish bride accompanied him on his subsequent campaigns, even to the point of riding into the battle of Maharajpore astride an elephant. Juana could not bear to be separated from `the only thing on earth my life hangs on and clings to!'Lady Smith journeyed with Sir Harry to the Cape, where as a soldier-administrator and later governor ('the swearing governor') he left a deep mark on South African history by alternately coaxing and combating Xhosa tribesmen, rebellious Hottentots, independent-minded Boers and Anti-Convict rioters.--------------------------------------------------------------------This saga of war and romance is based largely on the racy reminiscences and hundreds of private letters written (with no mock modesty) by Sir Harry himself and on materials found in the archives of Britain and the Republic of South Africa. The result is a revealing insight into a remarkable individual whose pluck, powers of endurance and unfailing optimism helped to shape the course of empire. N° de ref. de la librería 34549
