From Library Journal:
Mackey, a cofounder of the Feminist Writers Guild, here offers revisionist historical ficton with a minimalist plot. Marrah, who has been raised in an idyllic matriarchy, rescues Stavan, a warrior from the "beastmen." Together they trek from Xori on the shores of Brittany to Shamba on the Black Sea to the Sea of Grass, home of Stavan's family. They are barbarians with all the stereotypical macho, aggressive, bloodthirsty traits. Mackey bludgeons the reader with her uncritical vision of the joyous, caring, nurturing, loving--in a word, perfect--societies that worship a female goddess. Conversely, nothing about the barbaric "beastmen" has any redeeming social value; Marrah and Stavan can fall in love only because he is an outcast from his own tribe. This is not another Clan of the Cave Bear by any stretch of the imagination. Possibly for academic and feminist collections.
