This expedition sailed from La Rochelle in June 1695 with the aim of harming the English trade and establish a colony in the region of the Strait of Magellan. Vessels first took the road to Africa, where they won a victory on the British in seizing the Fort James located in Senegambia and its wealth, then de Gennes headed for South America calling at Rio de Janeiro.
