The First Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers was to become one of the most famous units in the British Army. However, at its formation in India in 1644 it was known as the Madras Europeans, subsequently the Madras European Regiment , then The First Madras Fusiliers and later the 102nd Royal Madras Fusiliers. finally taking the name as recorded in the book's title in 1881. By then the unit had accumulated a great many battle honours, most for campaigns in Southern India. At the time of preperation of the book, the Regiment was one of the oldest in the British Army. As the author points out in his preface the "history of the corps between 1644 and 1842 is the history of the British Empire in India during that period." The history is divided into 21 chronological chapters, each records a period of service, some covering a few years, some a single year only. Many of the famous names of Indian colonial days had close associations with the unit under its different titles. First editions of this regimental history are very scarce. First edition from Hugh Rees of 1910, 152 pages including six appendices, glossary and index, colour frontis portrait of Field Marshal The Duke of Connaught and Strathearn is protected by its original tissue sheet, The 13 other illustrations listed are b/w, all present and in good condition, comprising art portraits and scenes, photos, one folded plan with a folded map of Southern India at back. Blue hard covers are VG with bumps to corners, few handling wear marks with vertical crease marks centre both boards, none of these creases shows any indication of cracking. The gilt Regimental insignia centre front is bright ,as are the gilt front and spine titles. internally the book is VG+. (At the top corner of the half-title is an ink inscription of a Captain in the "1st Royal Dublin Fus, B.E.F France 19.3.17."). N° de ref. de la librería 004666
