Descripción

8vo (210 x 135mm). [8], 430, [1] pages, including half-title and errata leaf. 19th-century quarter leather with early speckled paper over boards and spine gilt in four compartments with gilt title; (opening leaves dampstained, some light intermittent toning, extensive contemporary marginalia). First edition of the Marquis de Puységur’s unorthodox and uncritical work on exploring the unconscious; the first major study of this subject and a copy extensively inscribed by an early supporter in French. On certain pages only annotations are dense and meander in every direction of marginal space – a truly interesting enhancement. Chastnet de Puységur’s first edition work on the physiological symptoms of sleep walking and the phenomenon of Mesmerism The French aristocrat and hypnotist Marquis de Puységur was particularly interested in the therapeutic system of Mesmerism and formulated theories on its relationship with sleepwalking. By inducing a sleep-like trance, which he called somnabulisme, Puységur found he was able to talk to the patient, make them behave in certain ways, and affect his memories and perceptions. He was a proponent of the use of telepathy and clairvoyance in his treatments. Through psychic healing trances and the aid of magnets, Puységur reported his subjects appeared more intelligent, showed paranormal strength, and that further diagnoses were possible. This book is a sort of synthesis of his work and findings on natural and artificial somnabulisme. In his lifetime, Puységur founded a popular institute for animal magnetism to study patients in this manner. The institute grew rapidly up until the Revolutionary period, after which, the participants disbanded and Puységur was imprisoned for two years. Although his research quickly fell into the dark corners of time, Puységur continued to be endorsed by fringe medical practitioners and a growing band of travelling charlatans.
