Pettibon's massive catalogue raisonne, a beautifully designed affair. The cover of each of the artist's separate wrappered editions is included, and the designers of the book were careful to preserve the original dimensions of Pettibon's ink-and-paper creations, whose relevance and permanence seem to grow with every passing year. Sinopsis: For over twenty years, Raymond Pettibon's drawings have earned an international following for their fluid style and youthful, iconoclastic outlook. His work is acclaimed for its wit and erudite eccentricities, and reveals an affinity for a diverse group of authors-from Baudelaire to Henry James to Mickey Spillane-whose quotations abound in the drawings. This volume is a catalogue raisonn of his artist books produced between 1978 and 1998, many of which are now extremely rare and highly collected in both the art world and underground music circles. Popularized at first by small independent music labels and publishers, these booklets and zines were originally available only in very small print runs-editions sizes ranged from 30 to 150 copies, where Pettibon's rough yet cultivated style became synonymous with the late 70s and 80s underground aesthetic. Presenting over a hundred of Pettibon's publications-32 printed in their entirety-this new paperback edition is an important look at the development of one of the most significant artists of the last quarter century.
About the Author: Raymond Pettibon was born in Tucson, Arizona in 1957, and moved with his family shortly after to southern California. Graduating from U.C.L.A. with a degree in economics at the age of twenty, he taught mathematics in Los Angeles high schools, before devoting himself to being an artist. He became the unofficial in-house artist for the L.A. punk music scene of the late 1970s and early 80s as his brother Greg Ginn was lead guitarist of the band Black Flag and founder of SST records. His early drawings were distributed through self-published photocopied booklets and sold for one or two dollars. A retrospective exhibition of his work has recently traveled to major museums in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. He lives and works in Hermosa Beach, California.
Roberto Ohrt was born in 1954 in Chile. He has co-edited several art magazines and co-founded the academy Isotrop in Hamburg. Previous credits include the publication Phantom Avant-Garde, about the Situationist International. He lives and works as an art critic and curator in Hamburg.
Uwe Koch (b. 1967) is currently working on a definitive Artist's Books Bibliography, covering the last half of this century, to be published by Walther Knig in 2001. He lives and works as a freelance graphic designer in Cologne.
