Acerca de

Crowds will go wild for these 16 slam-dunk sports stories by authors ranging from Bruce Brooks to Ernest Hemingway.  Includes illustrations by acclaimed artist Thomas B. Allen.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 7 Up-- Consisting of 14 short stories and 2 chapter-long excerpts, this compilation includes contributors such as Ernest Hemingway, Jack London, James Thurber, John Updike, William Saroyan, and William Faulkner. America's most popular spectator sports--baseball, football, basketball, and horse-racing--are portrayed, as are popular participatory athletics such as skiing, hunting, tennis, billiards, and the martial arts. All of the stories are entertaining, from the sheer drama of the boxing match in London's "The Mexican" to the light humor of Thurber's "You Could Look It Up" to the blatant racism experienced by a black high school basketball player in an excerpt from Bruce Brooks's The Moves Make the Man . Occasional realistic black-and-white drawings appear throughout, but play a peripheral role in the book's makeup. The literary complexity of a number of the stories, combined with some sexual innuendos and infrequent mild obscenities makes the collection more suitable for YAs and adults, although a number of the stories will be enjoyed by upper-elementary students. All in all, this book will be read by a wide variety of patrons and joins A Century of Children's Baseball Stories (Stadium Bks, 1990), edited by Debra Dagavorian, in deserving a prominent place in libraries. --Tom S.
