Descripción

Almost from the time that railways were introduced in the early 1800s their potential for military use was recognised, yet little dealing specifically with that aspect of their usage was published prior to this book. While his book focuses on WWII and Britain's railways, the author also examines in lesser depth how other countries employed rail systems militarily. The first two chapters look to the American Civil War where railways had an important early role. A number of other pre-WWI campaigns are covered, as is the 1914-18 conflict. After examining WWII from several aspects of the part played by rail the concluding chapter looks at "The Aftermath of War." First edition of 1964. 221 pages including three appendices, bibliography and index, 29 b/w illustrations, mainly photos with some art, nine maps, few tables. Gray hard covers with black spine titles are G+ with mottling to both boards extending in, but decreasing, from the vertical edge, heaviest on rear board, probably damp effect.(There is no damage, bubbling or internal impact.). Ink name etc top corner FFEP, dealer stamp lower corner, otherwise internally excellent. Colour pictorial DJ is price clipped, VG with creasing and few chips to top edge, no damp marks.
