[14] pp. advertisements + [iv] + [ii] pp. preface + v-xv, including 2 pp. advertisements + 423 + [1] PP., including 1 pp. advertisement + [14] pp. advertisements, which continue on both pastedowns. Bound in original red cloth with blind stamped decorated boards enclosing gilt title; spine rebacked with contrasting title labels, gilt. Some wear to extremities and to a few page edges, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by folding map in pocket at end. A new type of road book for the golden age of cycling, first published in 1882. With the advent of the steam train and the consequent demise of long distance coaching, no road books of the traditional type had been published since 1826; topographical guides since then had been orientated towards the railway traveller. Charles Howard of the Wanderers' Bicycle Club, was also a member of the Bicycle Touring Club founded in in 1878. It was renamed the Cyclists' Touring Club in 1883, the year of publication of this edition. The change of name recognised the advent of the tricycle, appropriate for women unable to ride the high bicycle, or Ordinary as it was known at the time, suited only to athletic young men (the modern safety bicycle did not appear until 1885 in Coventry, 'the headquarters of bicycle manufacturing'). The guide indicates the types of road surface the cyclist may encounter, e.g. 'shaky macadam' and the nature of the hills. Illustrated by numerous advertisements for Ordinaries, tricycles and accessories for the cyclist. Published by Letts, well known for its printed diary publishing since 1816.
