Descripción

FIRST LONDON EDITION BY HUTCHINSON & CO, 1954. 8vo., pp. xviii, 3-338 plus appendices and index. Sketch map of the exploration areas in preliminary pages and enlarged in the text. Thirty-two b/w photographic illustrations. Original grey cloth, sound/GOOD. Previous owners inscription in the preliminary pages, o/w interior clean. There is a whiff of F. M. Bailey, that famous British explorer and spy, about the American Leonard Clark. Clark also worked behind enemy lines - in his case the Chinese Red Army and the Japanese Army, and was in charge of the United States underground activities and espionage systems in China, Mongolia and other countries in World War II. He was a true explorer in the Wilfred Thesiger mode, going to wild and inaccessible places all over the world. In The Rivers Ran East he is in the upper reaches of the Amazon in 1946 in search of gold and the legendary El Dorado. Few white men had by then entered the area and lived to tell the tale. Reading this book it is at times a little difficult to realise he actually did whilst at the same time recording a wealth of new information about the jungle and its inhabitants; human, animal and floral. Unlike Bailey, whose writing style is sometimes a little Victoria, Clark is very vivid and alive. A true book of adventure. N° de ref. de la librería 10465

Descripción de la librería

We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
