Shoreditch that is not built upon in some way or other; and if a tube railway comes and opens up a new area and makes a low cost for travelling--giving cheap fares--I cannot help thinking that some such, extension of the area for housing as is there suggested would be a relief, and a very proper relief, to the companies and would enable them to carry out these schemes without undue capital expenditure. Then there was another clause which we thought would be very helpful in these cases. We found this difficulty in the case of the London and North Western Railway Bill--that certain action was being taken by the Home Office as to which we were quite ignorant, and we were only informed of it just in time to enable us to take any effective action upon it; and what we suggest is that, where a scheme is made by the Secretary of State, to this clause at the bottom of page 83 this short provision should be added: Provided also that before ap proving of any scheme under this section ihe Secretary of State shall give notice of the provisions of such scheme to the Council of the Metropolitan Borough or the Corporation of the City of London, as the case may be, in whose area the houses or sites of houses proposed to be acquired are situate, and shall take into consideration any representation thereon made by such Council or Corporation within one month from the receipt of such notice. That would be very useful in a case that is going on now in Shoreditch. We are rehousing. We shall be building model dwellings to rehouse about 3, 000 persons; and if the Home Secretary were going to make a scheme without our knowledge as regards what he was going to do there, he might make a very different scheme if he had had that K knowledge Chairman--continued. knowledge--th. . .
