Descripción:

27pp. Folio. Attractive recent cloth binding. British Parliamentary Paper. bound with GUAGE COMMISSIONERS' REPORT. MINUTES OF EVIDENCE TAKEN BEFORE THE COMMISSIONERS. 346pp, bound with APPENDIX. 462pp. The Royal Commission on broad and narrow guage railways carried out a detailed examination of the economic and technical problems caused by the existance of two railway guages. Marc Isambard Brunel, engineering advisor to the Great Western Railway, the only railway to use broad guage spoke in favour of the guage he had advised. He was supported by several other noted engineers who stressed the comparative advantages of the broad guage in running speed cand safety. Among the witnesses who opposed the broad guage were Robert Stephenson and John Braithwate. Supporters of the narrow guage admitted that it did not permit high speed running but considered that it was much cheaper to construct and maintain. The commission recommended that future railways should be narrow guage but that the GWR should be permitted to continue to use the broad guage. A very clean copy. N° de ref. de la librería
