236pp. + 15pp. appendix. (1st. ed.). This book of songs and musicological commentary is one of Dett's major works, written after his Harvard years and during his triumphant Hampton period. In it he clearly expresses his love and admiration for the musical genius of Black Americans and their capacity for inspiration and spiritual exaltation. What is especially interesting is the fact that this copy is inscribed as a Christmas gift to Mr. and Mrs. Allan Freelon on the front flyleaf. Freelon (b. 1895) was a noted Philadelphia-born, Penn-educated Harlem Renaissance painter who won several Harmon Foundation awards in the late 1920's. He hosted many young Black painters at his Windy Crest Studios in Telford, PA. VG. N° de ref. de la librería 000188
