Montesquieu acheived literary renown for his Lettres Persanes (Persian Letters) in which he satirized contemporary Parisian culture through the eyes of a Persian visitor, Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brede et de Montesquieu (his full name) was an historian, writer, political scientist, social commentator whose advice was much sought after and respected by British authority and the U.S. founding fathers alike. 265 pp. text, 1 p. errata, 17 pp. index. Some wear to original calf binding at corners and edges. 16mo. Measures 6.75" x 4.0". Boards double-ruled in gilt border. Previous owner's name and date (1737) to front free endpaper. Small round stamp of Geo. B. Mason, Delawanna, Passaic Co. NJ, to front free endpaper as well as a few stray ink and pencil marks. Gilt borders. Very light foxing and light rippling to some pages.
