The spine has a few light creases. Quiller is a spy who works for Britain¿s fictional ¿Bureau¿ and is a master of almost anything that might be required of him, e.g. flying a modern fighter jet, sniper, resisting torture, expertise in martial arts. He is multi-lingual, e.g. speaks fluent, idiomatic Moscow Russian and never carries a gun, believing that guns give their carriers a dangerously false sense of security and are hard to explain away if one is caught. Quiller is sure he can explain away almost anything except a gun. There are a number of standard elements to the Quiller novels. Quiller usually needs to be tricked into taking an assignment since Bureau operatives are allowed to refuse a mission. Whoever is dealing with Quiller has to play on his vanity and need for danger. On assignment Quiller is touchy (surprise!) and frequently battles his superiors who are responsible for directing the assignment¿s operations. In the best British public school tradition, everyone is referred to by last names. Refreshingly, he never encounters a megalomaniac who wants to take over the world and never draws assignments in exotic locales such as Monte Carlo (a bleak field in East Germany in the winter by the North Sea is more in Quiller¿s line). He doesn¿t gamble the night away in a luxurious casino prior to spending what¿s left of the night with a gorgeous woman (usually in the pay of the villain). Quiller's errand to deal with a rogue agent and a 'sleeper' who is sending sinister signals from Miami turns out to be a massive, invisible conspiracy with nothing less than the future of the White House at stake. The mission status is Classification One, signifying global importance (when isn't Quiller's mission of global importance?). N° de ref. de la librería 000269
