Descripción Bermuda Maritime Museum Press, Bermuda, 2002. Hard Cover. Estado de conservación: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: As New. First Edition. 288 pages, prof ill colour and b/w photos. Although it is now more than forty years since Queen of Bermuda left the trade between New York and Bermuda, this great liner is still very fondly remembered by older Bermudians, and many Americans who travelled on her. Furness Bermuda Line operated a number of fine liners on the short service from New York from 1919 to 1966, providing a reliable service throughout that period. Some of the liners they operated were world famous, in particular Monarch of Bermuda and Queen of Bermuda, which were known as the ‘Millionaire’s ships’ in the 1930s. During the 1920s Furness Bermuda Line had three smaller liners on the trade, starting with Fort Hamilton, which it inherited when the Quebec Steamship Co was purchased in 1919. Furness then purchased two former Australian coastal steamers from the Adelaide Steam Ship Co, which were renamed Fort Victoria and Fort St George, and proved well suited to the trade. In 1927 the magnificent new liner, Bermuda, was completed and joined the trade early in 1928, but in July 1931 this fine vessel was gutted by fire when alongside in Hamilton. Sent back to Britain to be rebuilt, the work was almost finished when Bermuda was gutted by fire a second time, becoming a total loss. For a short period the Furness Bermuda Line relied on chartered liners, particularly Veendam and Franconia, to maintain the Bermuda trade until Monarch of Bermuda was completed at the end of 1931, being joined by Queen of Bermuda in 1933. This pair operated to Bermuda until the war came, when they were taken over for military duties. Both survived the war, but Monarch of Bermuda was gutted by fire in 1947 while being refitted. Queen of Bermuda did return to the Bermuda trade, being joined in 1951 by the smaller Ocean Monarch. This pair continued the service until it was terminated in 1966.This book relates the full story of Furness Bermuda Line and its ships, and includes a large number of colour and black and white pictures, as well as deck plans and a pull-out line drawing of Queen of Bermuda. Has previous owner's nameplate inside front cover under dust jacket flap. Second Hand. Nº de ref. de la librería 343262
