68 pages with 61 figures, 38 plates of which 4 are in color and bibliography. Quarto (11 3/4" x 9 3/4") bound in original publisher's grey cloth with black lettering to front cover. First edition. Limited to 2000 copies. El Pueblo del Jaguar is a handsome commemorative volume issued on the occasion of the inauguration of the new physical plant of Mexico's National Museum of Anthropology. Although the book is put together in the manner of an art book, the volume is intended for the professional audience rather than the public at large. In chapter I, "a hypothesis on the development of Olmec culture," opens with a cursory survey of previously proposed theories of Olmec origins. Envisaged solely in historical terms, the problem is studied apart from any theoretical considerations of civilizations' "emergence" in the first place. Th historical development of Olmec culture is then traced through the archaeology of La Venta. A vast number of crucially important historical questions are subsumed under the heading of "a hypothesis of the development of Olmec culture." Chapter II, "the archaeological Olmec culture," is a commendable effort to reconstruct the ethnographic mainlines of Olmec culture. Organization follows the headings of economy and technology, physical type, clothing and ornament, social organization, religion, art, knowledge. Elements are brought together in a single time horizon and in static conception. The concluding chapter deals with the historical or documentary Olmecs. A survey is made of entries in the various native chronicles dealing with the "olmecas" and "olmecas-xicalancas." The text is profusely illustrated with uncaptioned drawings. Some of the drawings are of familiar pieces, others are not. (AA:67:1595-6) Condition: Lightly soiled, corners bumped, offset darkening to front end paper and pastedown.
