This present book is also known as the 1650 Scottish Psalter, and it was brought to the American colonies by the Presbyterian immigrants in the 18th century, and continued to be used in the early Presbyterian congregations in America (as well as later by Old Lights, and the Reformed Presbyterian Church). The first complete metrical Psalter in the English language was produced in 1564. This was revised by the Englishman Francis Rous in 1641, based upon the language of the King James Version of the Bible. The Westminster Assembly of Divines submitted this to further revision. This was further revised, and the General Assembly of the Kirk of Scotland authorised the 1650 edition called "The Psalms of David in Metre" for public worship. In Scotland editions of the Authorised King James Version (KJV) of the Bible were printed with the Metrical Psalter at the back."The Psalms of David in Metre" are part of the common heritage of the English speaking Church. Most of the Psalms in the Psalter are in the 8,6,8,6 common metre. A small number of psalms are printed with 2 alternatives. This Psalter was published by the well-known Mathew Carey (1760 ? 1839) whose print shop was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was associated with Benjamin Franklin. In 1794?1796, Carey published America's first atlases. His 1802 map of Washington, D.C., was the first to name the stretch of land west of the United States Capitol as the "Mall". Carey printed the first American version of the Douay?Rheims Bible in 48 weekly installments; this Roman Catholic edition is popularly known as the Carey Bible. Regarding this particular Psalter: This is the 1803 edition and is the first known edition of this Psalter published by Carey, and is extremely rare. There are currently no copies listed in WorldCat Libraries. As far as we can tell this is the first time the Scottish Psalter was printed in the United States. Inv. # 10948.
