Half-title in each volume. Blue morocco backed, black cloth, the spines in 5 compartments with 4 raised bands, lettered in gilt "Ampere/Amerique" in one compartment, the volumes numbered in another, with the initials "L.R." at the foot of each spine, all edges speckled, marbled endpapers (rubbed at the extremities). PROVENANCE: Contemporary ownership inscription of "L. Rodany" signature at the head of each half-title page. Formerly of the Perrette collection. "Jean Jacques Ampere was a teacher, historian, philologist, authority on Scandinavian and German epic poetry, and a member of the French Academy. He made a grand tour of the United States, Cuba, and Mexico." Clark III, 442. Ampere became a member of the Academie Francaise shortly before making his trip to America in 1851 and was a friend and colleague to literary luminaries in France such as Prosper Mérimée, and Alexis de Tocqueville, whose letter to Ampere provides the introduction to this work.
