The purpose of English for Health Sciences is to empower students with the language and life skills they need to carry out their career goals. Diagnosing Putting a patient at ease with small talk, taking a medical history, asking open-ended questions, presenting a case, and explaining medical tests and procedures to a patient Treating a patient Giving advice, explaining a case to a relative, explaining causes and treatments, giving discharge instructions, and calming people down Dealing with critical patients Describing and identifying causes of pain, recognizing and adopting supportive intonation, presenting a case in lay as well as medical terms, and breaking bad news Assisting in rehabilitation and long-term care Examining a non-verbal patient, communicating with the next of kin, explaining test results to patient and relatives, explaining the conditions of long-term care, and giving instructions for physical therapy Referring a patient Calling in a specialist, referring a patient to another doctor for tests and/or treatment, and giving post-operative advice

About the Author:

Kristin Johannsen held an MA in Applied English Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. She had extensive experience teaching English in Japan, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, France, and the United States. She has presented her ideas on global issues at multiple conferences around the world and was a published author. She spoke several languages including French, German, Spanish, Norwegian, and Korean.

Martin Milner holds a Masters of Education from the University of Wales, Cardiff. He has held teaching and advising posts in Mexico, Namibia, Zanzibar, and Scotland. His work for the British Council sent him to Hungary and Thailand to set up English programs as well as advise the teachers in the program. He currently lives in Mexico where he works as a writer and editor.

The author team (Hector Sanchez, Eric Tejeda, David Ramos, Isa Tirado, Norma Hernandez, and Arthur Frias) are the academic coordinators of the different programs offered by PROULEX, the University of Guadalajara Language Center. They are experienced in-house materials developers, testing materials writers, and syllabus designers. They all have close contact with the Comunidades Bilingues project, will be able to observe classes, interview instructors and pilot materials throughout the writing of the series.

The author Ivor Williams, is an experienced ELT materials writer. He co-authored the series Greenlight (McGrawHill) and has collaborated on a number of Thomson ELT projects. He is the author of In Detail Teacher's Edition.
