Winfred Porter Truesdell (Editor / Hrsg.). The Print Connoisseur, Vol. II, No. 3, March 1922. A periodical for the print collector. P./S. 172-253 (untrimmed). Good in wraps. Contains an original etching by Arthur W. Heintzelman, ›Head of Old Man with Hat.‹, signed in the plate and dated Paris 21. Subjects covered include Heintzelman, early American historical prints, the Peale family, and Charles Meryon. The Heintzelman etching is in very good condition. The image itself is pristine; on the verso, there is some light spotting which has not come through to the front. Arthur William Heintzelman: A highly esteemed American etcher of the early twentieth century, Arthur William Heintzelman first studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. He then went to Europe for several years and completed his education in Holland, France, Belgium, Spain, England and Scotland. Upon returning to the United States, Heintzelman accepted the position of Head of the Fine Arts Department at the Detroit School of Design for a period of four years. Heintzelman created his first original etching in 1915. During the following three years he created more than fifty more, but many were to his dissatisfaction and he often destroyed his plates after only two or three impressions. After the conclusion of World War One, Heintzelman returned to Paris on a permanent basis. It was from this point on that his greatest etchings and drypoint engravings were made. Within several years his art was featured in major exhibitions throughout the United States, England and France. Arthur Heintzelman was a full member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, the California Society of Etchers, the American Federation of Arts, the Societe Gravure Originale en Noir and the Associee Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts, in Paris. His original etchings are included in such major museums as the Metropolitan Museum, NY, the Chicago Art Institute, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Bilbliotheque Nationale, Paris, and the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum, London.
