Sinopsis: In 1398, Venician sailor Zeno crossed the Atlantic with a "Prince of the Islands, " leaving a description of his exploration. Pohl pieced together the evidence, identifying the prince as Henry Sinclair. Using patient research and an astonishing piece of calligraphic detective work, he reveals the purpose of this voyage.
About the Author: Pohl’s main source of information and inspiration was Zeno Narrative, a collection of dispatches written by Sinclair’s tireless chronicler Antonio Zeno who accompanied “A Prince of the Islands” on a transatlantic voyage and described in detail their arduous journey. Thanks to Pohl’s patient research (which includes an astonishing piece of calligraphic detective-work), we now know how the purpose of the expedition, the exact date of its arrival in New World and place of landing: we know of Prince Henry’s meeting with natives and of the enormous cultural impact he made upon them; and we know that he left a permanent memorial stamped on a rock in New England.

Illustrated, pp 230, a very good copy in a slightly worn and price-clipped dustwrapper. [Henry Sinclair, Earl of Orkney, Baron of Roslin (c.1345 - c.1400) was a Scottish and a Norwegian nobleman. Sinclair held the title Earl of Orkney under the King of Norway. Almost nothing more is known about Sinclair's life. However, much has been written through conjecture about his supposed career as an explorer. In 1784, he was identified by Johann Reinhold Forster as possibly being the Prince Zichmni described in letters allegedly written around the year 1400 by the Zeno brothers of Venice, in which they describe a voyage throughout the North Atlantic under the command of Zichmni. The claim that Henry Sinclair explored North America has been popularised by several authors]. The claim is based on several separate propositions: That the letters and map ascribed to the Zeno brothers and published in 1558 are authentic; that the voyage described in the letters as taken by Zichmni around the year 1398 to Greenland actually reached North America; that Zichmni is Henry Sinclair.].
