Descripción George Allen, Ruskin House, 156 Charing Cross Road, London, 1894. Decorative Cloth. Estado de conservación: Fine. First Printing. First Illustrated Edition of Jane Austen's best-loved novel, "the most perfect, characteristic, the most eminently quintessential of its author's works." (George Saintsbury, from the preface) xxvii,[1],476,2]pp, with 160 line drawings by Hugh Thomson. Publisher's smooth dark blue-green cloth, front cover and spine entirely gilt in the Peacock design (in the style of Macmillan's Cranford series, to which Thomson also contributed), all edges gilt, dark blue-green mat end papers. Without the tissue guard and the extremely scarce dust jacket. The embossed binding is bright and tight, with corners barely rubbed; page margins very lightly toned, text and illustrations fresh and clean throughout, an exemplary copy. Gilson E78. Sutherland, Jane Austen's Textual Lives, p. 9. Spielmann & Jerrold, pp. 85-98. First appearance of Thomson's memorable illustrations for Austen's tale of the wooing of Elizabeth Bennett by Mr. Darcy. Austen's "novels were showcases for Thomson's art. . . . [T]hese were his book's, not Austen's; and this is how they came to be known . . . To Pride and Prejudice alone, . . . Thomson contributed 160 line drawings (a mix of illustrations in the text, headpieces, tailpieces, ornamental initials); within a year of publication over 11,600 British copies were sold, totaling more than the lifetime sales of all Austen's novels put together[!]. (Sutherland) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.
