Sole edition, 8vo., 46pp., disbound. Daniel Madock (16- -1745), Non Conformist Minister at Uttoxeter, began his Philosophical Studies at Frankland's Dissenters Academy at Rathmell, Yorkshire. Richard Frankland (1630-1698) was one of the most important Nonconformist teachers of the 17th Century. He set up his Private Academy (the largest outside London) in his private house at Rathmell, Yorkshire, where he supervised the education of over 300 students, most of whom became Dissenting Ministers. The Academy played a pivotal role in the development of Presbyterian and Congregational dissent in the North of England. At the end of the tract is "A Catalogue of the Young Men Brought up by Mr. Frankland" at Rathmell. (Appendix 2 pp 35-46). Appendix 1 contains the text of a letter written from Trinity College, Cambridge on Feb. 7 1678/9 in Latin by Sir Isaac Newton to his friend, Dr Joshua Madock (father of Daniel) on the subject of his experiments into the Doctrine of Light and Colours. Newton says that he would not admit anything into his doctrine which was not supported by Experiments. This letter had lain unknown with Madock until it was here published. There is no mention of either Madock or Latham in Gray's Bibliography of the Works of Newton. A veiled reference to alchemy at the end of the sermon is strongly suggestive of an interest shared privately between Joshua Madock and Newton. Uncommon. ESTC finds 9 copies located in UK, but only Huntington and University of Pennsylvania copies in America. N° de ref. de la librería 16326
