Descripción

Staple-bound wraps; 12mo; pp. 77, with full-page b/w illustrations. Covers lightly rubbed and dust-smudged; some ight wrinkling to fore-edge of text block. A mysterious volume -- no other copies found in the marketplace, or on OCLC, and very little to be gleaned about either Pat or Philip Winsor. Morte Garchik is almost certainly Morton Garchik (1929-2009), an American painter, illustrator, and woodcut artist, who also wrote two important books on art instruction. This volume is a tribute to, or remembrance of, the author's wife, Leah, who was somehow involved with the World Federalist Movement in the early days of the U.N., and who later made a successful run for Congress -- tho little is found for either Leah Hissling (a name mentioned in the text, perhaps her maiden name) or Leah Winsor. The author alludes to being a photographer, and a familiar of painters Caroline (who perhaps suffered from Dementia Praecox, and later drowned), and Abel (who kills himself after the Korean War, and whose works are said to be in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art). The author never gives surnames and -- if we're correct that Morte Garchik is actually Morton Garchik -- may not be relied upon to recall them with complete accuracy. The result is an impressionistic, atmospheric account of New York, politics, art, and a marriage in the 1950s. Nicely (if simply) written and produced, and begging further study.
