Descripción
2 vols. FIRST EDITION. 8 vo. Modern cloth, all edges gilt. xvi, 635; (4), 592 pp. Bookplates removed from verso of free endpapers; apart from the nondescript bindings, a very good, clean set. Gerhardt (1816-56) studied with Liebig in Germany and with Dumas in France, where he met Laurent. Together they developed an important theory of types as a classification scheme in organic chemistry. The theory of types combined with Gerhardt's idea of homologous series, gave a general system of classification with some predictive power. "Gerhardt's most conspicuous contribution to the development of organic chemistry was his homologous series. .Drawing on the work of Dumas. and also of Kopp. Gerhardt generalized the concept of homologous series and introduced it into his 'Precis de chimie organique' of 1844." (D.S.B.). Partington IV.408.I points out that this book had a poor reception in France and Germany, and ".Gerhardt later said it contained 'the basis of my ideas' but that he would like to burn all the copies which had escaped this fate." Bolton I.475. Duveen, p.243. Smith Coll., p.191. Edelstein 974. N° de ref. del artículo 000261
